TAIPEI -- Land and sea warnings are
likely to be issued Tuesday for Tropical Storm Trami as it turns west
toward Taiwan, the Central Weather Bureau said yesterday.
As of 2 a.m., Trami was centered 790 kilometers east-southeast of
Eluanbi, the southernmost tip of Taiwan, moving northeast at a speed of 8
km per hour, the weather bureau said.
It was packing sustained winds of 83 kph, with gusts of up to 108 kph.
After hovering over waters southeast of Taiwan for the past few days
due to a low pressure system to the east, the storm is expected to speed
up as it turns west, forecasters said.
The bureau said it may issue a sea warning for Trami on Tuesday morning, and a land warning later in the day.
The eye of the storm is likely to either make landfall on Taiwan
between Aug. 21 and 22 or skirt the northern tip of the island, the
bureau said.
In either case, torrential rainfall can be expected throughout Taiwan, forecasters said.
Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Pewa, centered 6,240 km east of Eluanbi as of
2 a.m. Monday, is not likely to affect Taiwan on its current path
toward Japan, the weather bureau said.
