The Supreme Court case this week about contraception and Hobby Lobby
stirred many intense emotions from critics of the ruling, and one
Illinois church came up with one way to show their displeasure with the
decision. Reverend Mark Winters of the First
Congregational United Church of Christ made a joke on Facebook about
handing out condoms in front of Hobby Lobby, but church members
responded positively to the idea, and so that’s what they did.
They set up camp outside a local Hobby Lobby and handed out condoms
and other materials (not to anyone with children, though). Winters says
the purpose was to show that not all Christians oppose birth control and
to get people to question whether the ruling was fair to Hobby Lobby
employees.
He says, “I don’t know what Jesus thought about contraception, he
didn’t talk about it, but Jesus talked a lot about power, and he did not
like the powerful people taking advantage of their power at the expense
of the powerless.
