Jakarta. A TransJakarta bus carrying around 60 passengers crashed into a tree in West Jakarta on Friday morning, injuring 21.
The bus allegedly hit the tree after swerving to avoid motorcycles crossing into the dedicated bus lane — a practice that is illegal but widespread, despite recent crackdowns.
While traveling along corridor three, the Kalideres-Harmoni route, the bus careened off of Jalan Daan Mogot.
TransJakarta spokeswoman Sri Ulina Pinem said that 21 passengers were inured and none were killed.
The motorcycles suddenly jumped the separator while there was a bus that wanted to pass,” she said, as reported by Indonesian news portal Detik.com. “[The driver] swerved because the positions were too close. If he hit the brake, the motorcycles would be hit.”
After the crash, panicked passengers broke bus windows and climbed out.
“No one had broken bones, all suffered light injuries,” Sri said. “There were people admitted to Sumber Waras Hospital because they were in shock. But all of them have returned home.”
