An Irishman has reportedly been killed while crossing the road in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.
The man, believed to be 30 years old, was walking his bicycle across a busy stretch of the Monivong Boulevard in the capital city at 1.30am on Sunday, Cambodian time, when he was hit by a white Range Rover.
The Cambodia Daily reported traffic police chief Sem Kunthea as saying that "the vehicle was driving on Monivong Boulevard from south to north and hit the foreigner, who was walking his bike at the corner of Street 278 and Monivong Boulevard".
He added: "The foreigner was hit on his right side and his body landed far away."
The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. The SUV, damaged during the incident, did not stop at the scene of the crash and continued for some blocks before stopping.
Police said the driver and passengers left the car there and fled on foot. They added that they are working on identifying the owner through the vehicle registration.
Mr Kunthea added: "We are cooperating with the municipal foreigner police unit to find the identification of the victim."
The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade confirmed that the victim was Irish and said it was providing consular assistance through its embassy in Vietnam.
Formal identification of the victim has not yet been established.
